1st SHADWELL CUBS SUMMER 2011 NEWSLETTER + PROGRAMME
Hi all.
This is the start of my third term as Cub Scout Leader, and I feel to be settling in now, and hopefully everyone is getting used to me.
This summer term looks like being a busy one with various Pack, Group, District and even County Events. Hopefully there will be good weather and we intend to make the most of it with as much outdoor stuff as possible. There will be less emphasis on badges this term (though we will do some) and more on getting outside to have fun.
I have put the list of activities at the end of this letter. Please remember that this is a PROVISIONAL list and things will change as we go along, and details will be released for some activities closer to the time. I will keep everyone up to date by email when there is over a weeks notice, and by text if there are last minute changes, so please make sure you let me know if your email address changes and make sure I have your mobile phone numbers.
New Finishing Time
You all know how I struggle to fit everything in by our normal finish time of 7.45pm, and we usually run over quite a bit. With the (hopefully) better weather we will be doing more outdoor meetings and these usually take longer too. Therefore meetings will now finish at 8pm unless stated otherwise.
So normal Cub-night meetings are 6.30pm – 8.00pm
Uniforms
As I am sure you will be aware, we have a uniform inspection at the start of each meeting. Points are awarded for being present, being smartly turned out (including an Ironed necker), and having all badges on uniforms and in the right place. The points count towards prizes at the end of the term so please help your son/daughter by making sure they are smartly dressed and have all their badges on.
I have noticed that a number of Cubs haven’t got all the badges sewn on that they have been awarded. They work very hard for these badges and are very proud of them. They love to show them off when they are with other Cubs – especially from other packs. Please make sure your Cub’s uniform has all the correct badges.
Leaders and Parent Helpers
We still only have myself (Akela) as a full Scout Warranted leader. Debbie Ballantyne has taken on the mantle of Pack Assistant which is brilliant, and I also have Naomi Probert, who is a Junior Leader. Rosanna Tacconelli and Lindsey Boam are Scouting approved Occasional Helpers, (a strange name for regular parent helpers) and they are very much appreciated.
Many of you already help me out each term and I am very grateful for the time and effort you have put in to allow the smooth running of the Pack. Jayne Shillito deserves a special mention for all the hard work she put into making the Emergency Training evenings such a success. However, I need more parents to help as we have to fulfil the correct adult:child ratios for both safety and legal reasons. This term we have a number of events where we will need lots of parents to help (Especially for the Sponsored Walk). Please step up and help when we ask – most parents have a great time when they join in.
If you wish to get a bit more involved, or be more regularly involved then please talk to me about it.
Ideas for Activities
Coming up with fresh and interesting activities/trips/events is quite demanding, so I am open to any and all ideas that you may have. We may not take them all up, but if you have any suggestions then don’t be shy, I am very approachable. If you have any other concerns or queries then please let me know. You can talk to me at the end of each meeting or:

Subs and fees
This term’s subs are now due - £35 for those of you who pay each term.
At the end of last term all the Cubs received at least one badge they had been working towards. There is a presentation slip with each badge that has the amount of money owed on it. I would appreciate prompt payment, as having to chase up non-payers is a terrible chore.
Please put any payments (whether for Subs, Badges, or Events) in an envelope with your child’s name on it and what the money is for e.g. subs. This helps me make sure I can record correctly who has paid what. The start and finish of meetings can often be a melee and it is entirely possible that money just handed over gets allocated to the wrong cub. I know you don’t want to pay twice for anything, so please help me to help you by putting money in a labelled envelope. Thank you.
Please make cheques payable to “1st Shadwell Scouts”
